The news that the UFC is headed back to New Zealand at the end of this year or early 2017 has Kiwi-NESIAN mixed martial arts fans excited. But there is only one name they want headlining the event – none other than Samoan Mark Hunt, one of New Zealand’s greatest exports in any of the fighting codes.
It is more than 18 months since the first and only UFC event in New Zealand was held at Vector Arena in Auckland in June, 2014. But as the hugely-popular organisation readies for its second event in Brisbane on March 20, UFC director of operations for Canada, Australia and New Zealand Tom Wright said a return to Kiwi shores was coming “sooner rather than later”.
Nicknamed, the “Super Samoan”, Hunt is one of the UFC’s biggest names ranked in the top 10 of the organisation’s heavyweight division. Though he is currently based in Australia, he has a huge following in New Zealand, particularly among the Pacific community. Hunt is heading UFC Fight Night 85 in Brisbane on 20 March 2016 where he is fighting American veteran Frank Mir.
