Matariki Rhythmz has launched in Aukilani and is set to offer high school students in the region the opportunity to shine on stage in music and dance. The event offers students the chance to express their Nesian cultures as well as their urban mix. It has been pondered whether this could be a perfect platform for those Polyfest groups who wished to contemporise their Poly rhythmz into more of a hip-hop mashup. Also offering the music component makes the competition even more interesting in that schools could possibly go all out and take both dance and music titles.

The winning categories are : band, solo and duo in the music side, and team and mega-crew on the dance side.

The categorisation language of ‘team’ and ‘mega-crew’ seems to indicate a leaning towards hip-hop crews but organisers have assured Nesian Arts that if crews were to enter and had another take on the style of dance they wished to present, that was completely up to them. But, they would be judged on things like – innovation, originality,¬†execution and wow factor – with the premise that Polynesian movements would also be included.

Youth Performance Trust, who run the event, previously ran Smokefree Pacifica Beats (2006 – 2015) and with that sort of experience behind the comp it’s looking like it may be a new breeding ground for future talent not only to shine but also find their first steps into the professional realm.
